An Emerald Is As Green As Grass - A Poem by Christina Rossetti

An Emerald Is As Green As Grass is a poem by Christina Rossetti which uses similes to show the colour of different stones. Can you think of any other similes for these stones? The value of the flint is emphasised at the end of the poem; the undervalued stone which lies in the mud actually turns out to be the most useful. The poem is valuable in teaching us the value in all things. An emerald is as green as grass;  A ruby red as blood;  A sapphire shines as blue as heaven;  A flint lies in the mud.  A diamond is a brilliant stone,  To catch the world's desire;  An opal holds a fiery spark;  But a flint holds fire.
