Lo, How a Rose Ere Blooming - Traditional Christmas Carol - Lyrics
Lo, how a rose e'er blooming is a Christmas carol and Marian Hymn of German origin. It is sometimes known as "A Spotless Rose".
In the original German version the carol is called "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" which literally translates to "A rose has sprung up"
It is most commonly sung to a melody which was harmonized by the German composer Michael Praetorius in 1609
It has appeared in a variety of feature film soundtracks, including Love Story (1970) and The Time Traveler's Wife (2009)
Lyrics:
Lo, how a rose e'er blooming,
From tender stem hath sprung.
Of Jesse's lineage coming,
As those of old have sung;
It came, a flow'ret bright,
Amid the cold of winter,
When half spent was the night.
Isaiah 'twas foretold it,
The Rose I have in mind,
With Mary we behold it,
The virgin mother kind;
To show God's love aright,
She bore to men a Savior,
When half spent was the night.
The shepherds heard the story,
Proclaimed by angels bright,
How Christ, the Lord of Glory,
Was born on earth this night.
To Bethlehem they sped
And in a manger found him,
As angel heralds said.
This Flower, whose fragrance tender
With sweetness fills the air,
Dispels with glorious splendour
The darkness everywhere;
True man, yet very God,
From Sin and death he saves us,
And share our every load.
This is such a lovely relaxing Christmas song to listen to, I hope you enjoy singing along with this recording sung by Mark F. Smith and Laurie Anne Walden
