Hark The Herald Angels Sing - Christmas Song
Hark The Herald Angels Sing is a classic Christmas carol.
I hope you enjoy singing along with the angels to the lyrics 👼
Facts about the lyrics:🎅🎄
The carol first appeared in 1739 in the collection Hymns and Sacred Poems.
The original hymn was composed as a "Hymn for Christmas-Day" by Charles Wesley. He was inspired to write the hymn by the sound of the church bells on Christmas Day.
Charles Wesley wrote more hymns than any other male writer - about 6500!
The original lyrics were: Hark how all the Welkin rings "Glory to the Kings of Kings"
The word 'welkin' in this version has the meaning 'sky' or 'heaven'
The music for the hymn was written by Felix Mendelssohn, who also wrote the beautiful A Midsummer Night's Dream Overture when he was 17. This overture includes the world famous 'Wedding March' music, which is still used at weddings to this day
Mendelssohn composed the music we sing to the hymn in 1840, to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of Johann Gutenberg's invention of movable type printing

Lyrics:
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King!
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled."
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With th' angelic host proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King!
Christ, by highest heaven adored:
Christ, the everlasting Lord;
Late in time behold him come,
Offspring of the favoured one.
Veiled in flesh, the Godhead see;
Hail, th'incarnate Deity:
Pleased, as man, with men to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel!
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King!
Hail! the heaven-born
Prince of peace!
Hail! the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die:
Born to raise the son of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King !"
